Woodworking has been practiced on the islands of Micronesia for millennia by the CHamoru people. Today, Maha Jumaie Taitano carries on this tradition in her contemporary art for MODXMOD FURNISHINGS. The triangle motifs speak to the connection between the land and the water. Maha describes her rendering as walnut wood representing the Talo'fo'fo mountain slopes, with a purpleheart river flowing over Talo'fo'fo Falls on its path to the sea. Hard maple provides the surrounding ocean environment.
These solid wood drawer front upgrades showcase Maha's woodworking skills, which use manual techniques rather than computer-driven CNC templates. The overlapping triangle motifs require precise repeated cuts to create the constant rhythm. Single pieces of milled wood are carefully glued and then re-cut to consistent angles. She has developed a special jig to allow for angled clamping of several triangles at once; however, multiple glue-up steps occur to create the full pattern. This slow construction of a single line requires days to form and set before being joined with the solid maple field.
Maha coordinates with MODXMOD FURNISHINGS to install the European-style tab pulls and drawer mounting hardware. Each handcrafted piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist, an accessories kit, and care instructions.
